Since the military takeover in Myanmar on February 1, 2021, violence has ravaged the country’s healthcare system, leaving devastation in its wake. Beginning in late 2022, armed conflicts intensified, with the Tatmadaw, Myanmar’s military, resorting to using aircraft-delivered explosive weapons against communities, particularly in Kayah state.
Aerial Attacks Target Healthcare Facilities
In a series of alarming incidents, Myanmar military aircraft dropped explosive weapons, causing extensive damage to clinics, hospitals, pharmacies, and rural health centers. These attacks were often part of broader assaults on civilians and opposition groups, resulting in collateral damage to civilian infrastructure, including homes, monasteries, and schools.
Human Toll: Health Workers Under Fire
The consequences of these attacks extend beyond infrastructure damage. Tragically, at least nine health workers lost their lives, and four others sustained injuries due to airstrikes by Myanmar military aircraft. Health personnel faced dangers not only from direct attacks on healthcare facilities but also while providing essential medical care to those injured during armed clashes.
Innocent Lives Lost
The violence spared no one, not even those seeking refuge in internally displaced persons (IDP) camps. A harrowing incident in April 2023 saw a fully operational hospital struck by military airstrikes. Resulting in injuries to a nurse, a patient, and three civilians. The attack also damaged two ambulances and forced further displacement of IDPs sheltering near the hospital.
Addressing the Crisis: A Call for Action
The escalating violence in Myanmar underscores this. The urgent need for international intervention to protect civilians, healthcare workers, and vital healthcare infrastructure. Efforts must be made to ensure the provision of medical care. To those in need and to hold perpetrators of violence accountable for their actions.
Conclusion: Standing Against Injustice
As the world witnesses the unfolding tragedy in Myanmar,. It is imperative to stand in solidarity with the people affected by the violence. By raising awareness and advocating for peace and justice. We can contribute to efforts aimed at ending the suffering and restoring hope in Myanmar’s beleaguered communities.
