In a significant move to enhance medical education infrastructure, the Uttar Pradesh Medical Education Department has put forward an application to the National Medical Commission (NMC) for the expansion of medical colleges and the addition of seats for MBBS.
Aiming for Growth and Development
The Uttar Pradesh government has proposed the establishment of 14 new medical colleges across the state, intending to add a total of 1,400 MBBS seats for the academic year 2024-25. This endeavour reflects the state’s commitment to bolstering medical education and addressing the growing demand for healthcare professionals.
Seeking NMC Approval
The state government has formally submitted applications to the NMC, seeking approval for the increase in the number of colleges and MBBS seats. Upon receiving the NMC’s approval, these additional seats will supplement the existing 8,000 MBBS seats in Uttar Pradesh.
Expanding Reach Across Districts
The proposed new medical colleges are set to be established in districts such as Kanpur Dehat, Lalitpur, and Kaushambi, among others, thereby extending medical education opportunities to various regions within the state. Additionally, efforts are underway to appoint faculty members, including principals, for these upcoming colleges.
Building on Past Achievements
Building on past achievements, the Department of Medical Education had previously added 1,300 MBBS seats and inaugurated 13 new medical colleges in Uttar Pradesh in March of the preceding year. This proactive initiative aimed to strengthen medical education infrastructure and cater to the healthcare needs of the population.
Future Plans for Growth
In continuation of this trajectory, the Department of Medical Education, Uttar Pradesh, has announced plans to further augment the capacity of government medical colleges by adding 1,300 additional MBBS seats. Furthermore, 13 new medical colleges are scheduled to commence their inaugural academic sessions from the academic year 2023-24.
Current Landscape and National Progress
Currently, Uttar Pradesh boasts a total of 65 medical colleges, comprising 35 government and 30 private institutions, spread across 59 districts. This expansion aligns with the nationwide trend highlighted by Union Health and Family Welfare Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, who informed Parliament of an 82 percent surge in the number of medical colleges nationwide. This increase, from 387 before 2014 to 704 by July of the preceding year, has been accompanied by a remarkable 110 percent rise in the number of MBBS seats, soaring from 51,348 to 107,948 during the same period.
