Mental Health Workers Take a Stand

In a bold move, echoing their unwavering dedication to mental health care. Approved Mental Health Social workers within Cumberland’s Urgent Care Team are set. To stage a walkout from 9 am on March 22nd until 9 am on March 25th, 2024. This marks the second time Cumberland’s carers have taken industrial action amid an ongoing dispute.

A Community’s Support

With over 2,100 signatures from the public rallying behind them, the Urgent Care Team stands resolute in their fight for recognition. These frontline heroes, on call round-the-clock across Cumbria, make crucial decisions in the heat of the moment, determining the necessity of immediate detention for those in crisis.

A Quest for Fair Evaluation

The roots of this conflict trace back to July 2022, when these dedicated professionals submitted a request for a review of their roles. They believed their positions had been undervalued, a sentiment unfortunately echoed by Cumberland Council’s denial of their plea.

Fran Robson, GMB Organiser, encapsulated the frustration and determination of the workers, stating, “The public support shows the people of Cumberland are right behind their urgent care team and their plea for a regrade.”

A Plea for Recognition

Robson emphasizes that this is not merely a matter of financial resources. Despite the council’s expenditure of over £600,000 in agency staff costs within the team over the past two years, the call for a fair regrade remains unheeded.

A Call for Dialogue

In the face of impending strike action, the Urgent Care Team members maintain their commitment to delivering compassionate and effective mental health care. Their hope lies in meaningful negotiations with council leaders, aimed at addressing their concerns and averting further disruption.

A Vital Decision

The ball now rests in the court of Cumberland’s council leaders. The plea is clear: listen to the voices of these dedicated workers, their colleagues, and the wider community. Engage in constructive dialogue. To resolve these pressing issues and ensure the continued provision of high-quality mental health services for all.
